I went through the official pricing and help pages (checked 2026-11-03) and put the differences in one place.

The short version

Codex is bundled with ChatGPT plans and shares usage with ChatGPT chat. The Pro tiers ($100 / $200 / $500) currently have no 5-hour limit.

Claude Code is bundled with Claude Pro ($20, or $17/mo billed annually), Max ($100) and Ultra ($200). It shares 5-hour and weekly windows with Claude chat.

Already paying for ChatGPT? Start with the Codex you already have. Doing long multi-file agent runs? Many developers prefer Claude Code.

Prices exclude tax. The message ranges are OpenAI's published estimates, not fixed quotas.

What changes in December

OpenAI's help center says that from December, Plus, Pro and Business usage becomes token-based and shared between ChatGPT and Codex; Instant chat doesn't count. If you budget by "number of messages," revisit that next month.

Which is cheaper in practice?

Honestly: it depends on your workload, and I haven't benchmarked the same task on both yet (marked TBD on the page). If you've measured tokens or time per task, I'd love to hear the numbers in the comments.

One regional note

Anthropic's Supported Regions Policy doesn't list mainland China or Hong Kong. If you're working from an unsupported region, a hosted alternative such as DeepSeek's Anthropic-compatible API with the Claude Code client is the compliant route — details here.
